What is Spiritual Direction?

Christian spiritual direction is a professional ministry in which one Christian, called a spiritual director, helps another person, known as a retreatant or directee, grow in intimacy with God. This service is typically offered for a fee.
The spiritual director guides the retreatant in recognizing that God’s love is entirely unconditional. The director helps the retreatant learn to listen, discern, and respond to God’s communication. As the retreatant experiences God’s love more deeply, they are freed to live lives that reflect that love through service to others.

Reflecting on his own retreat experience with the Spiritual Exercises, Tom says, “The retreat was life changing. I came to understand more clearly that prayer and communion with God are not something we initiate ourselves. It is God who takes the initiative and leads the relationship. God seeks us out as companions, inviting us to serve others and the world with compassion. My work now is to share this transformative experience with retreatants, so they, too, can embrace their call to be people for others.”

Tom is in full compliance with the Safe Environments training and certification requirements of the Diocese of Tucson. He is also a volunteer of the St. Maximilian Kolbe Prison Ministry team of Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona, which provides weekly services and eucharistic support to incarcerated residents of Arizona Prisons.
